Made with beef, BBQ sauce and cheddar cheese, these sloppy joe muffins are sure to be a family favorite!
I’m going to be honest, sloppy joes aren’t a recipe that I get excited to make. But my son absolutely devours them, so I always give in when he begs me to make them.
Sloppy joes are messy, always have too much sauce and not enough bread!
So this week, I decided to switch up the recipe a bit and guess what? This is my kind of sloppy joes!
This recipe isn’t as messy and is still kid friendly. Yay for making a recipe that everyone enjoys!

Scoop beef mixture with spoon and fill each biscuit.
Add shredded cheese to top of each muffin.

I prefer making my own sloppy joe sauce because I don’t like a ton of sauce on my meat. But feel free to use a can of sauce if that’s what you have.

What to serve with sloppy joes (the best side dishes to make)
Looking for the best side dishes to serve with sloppy joes? Then look no further. Below you’ll find the best recipes and foods to serve with this classic sandwich.
Break out the bib because dinner is about to get messy! Can anyone even eat sloppy joes without making a mess?
What are sloppy joes?
Sloppy joes can be made in all manner of ways. From serving on a hamburger bun, making them muffin style or open-faced over cornbread. There is no wrong way of eating this dish.
Sloppy Joe is typically made using ground beef, tomato sauce, brown sugar, bbq sauce Worcestershire sauce, and diced bell peppers. Then the meat mixture is placed on hamburger buns or brioche buns. You can substitute the meat for lean ground meat or ground turkey.
But no matter what ingredients you add, be sure to have plenty of napkins. Because we all know you are going to need them!
The history behind Sloppy Joe
In the 1950s there was a chef called Joe, who worked at Floyd Angell’s café in Sioux City, Iowa. Loose meat sandwiches were very popular and were the most ordered item on his menu.
A “loose meat” sandwich is a burger with crumbly beef patties instead of formed ones. So Joe decided to add a variation to the sandwich by adding tomato sauce to the mixture. Customers couldn’t get enough of this new creation!
As you could guess, the sandwich was sloppy. The name stuck and sandwich creation because a hit across the country.
What to serve with Sloppy Joes
What side dishes to serve with sloppy joes? Here are a few of my favorite side dish recipes that go great with Sloppy Joes.
Potato Chips
Homemade brau chips. AKA the best potato chip around. Plus chips great for picking up the meat mixtures that have fallen off the sandwich!
Mexican Street Corn (also known as Elotes) is a combination of sweet, savory, and spicy all at once. This recipe is simple and bursting with flavor. It’s also great because it only takes about 15 minutes to make.
To make this recipe you need to make fries in the air fryer and then sprinkle on grated parmesan cheese, truffle salt, parsley and enjoy! So simple, yet packed with flavor.
Chopped salad is a simple green salad, loaded with bacon and cheese. So delicious and easy to make! Drizzle on your favorite dressing and you have a tasty side dish.
Jalapeno Fries (link to JulieMeasures)
Add a spicy side dish to your menu! Make your own battered and fried Jalapeño Fries. Serve them along with some ranch and bleu cheese dressing for dipping.
Mustard Potato Salad
Potato Salad is a great side dish, especially to serve during the summer, to bring on a picnic, or for a potluck dinner.
This recipe is easy to make in large batches, so I think this will be my new go-to recipe for when needing to feed a crowd. Made with diced potatoes, onions, apples, apple cider, and thyme. Cooked to perfection in a cast-iron skillet.
Air Fryer Tostones (Fried Plantains)
Tostones are twice-fried plantain slices commonly found in Latin American cuisine and Caribbean cuisine. These Air Fryer Tostones are great as a healthier substitute for chips or buns, whether on the Whole30 diet or you just want to eat healthier!
Loaded Potato Skins are baked and filled with cheese, bacon, onions and jalapeños
This is the ultimate comfort for me. It reminds me of home as a child and I make this dish every chance I get. It does take about an hour to cook, but it’s worth the time spent in the kitchen.
This is an easy dinner that the entire family will enjoy. A family favorite that is great for busy weeknights.
