An Alaskan cruise is one of those once-in-a-lifetime adventures—and the port excursions are where the magic really happens. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, wildlife lover, or history buff, each stop along the Inside Passage offers something truly unforgettable.

Here’s a guide to the best excursions at some of the most popular Alaskan cruise ports: Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Victoria, Canada.
What to Do in Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan & Victoria

Juneau: Glaciers, Whales & Dogsledding

Mendenhall Glacier Float Trip
Float down the Mendenhall River for a one-of-a-kind view of the glacier and Tongass National Forest. This scenic 5 mile thrilling rafting trip includes glacial rapids and plenty of wildlife sightings—perfect for those who want adventure and spectacular views.
Mendenhall Glacier & Nugget Falls Hike
This scenic glacier is one of the most iconic sights in Juneau. You can walk to Nugget Falls for an up-close view or just admire the glacier from the visitor center. This is a great excursion for those looking for something to do that is free.
Whale Watching in Auke Bay
Juneau is one of the best places in the world to spot humpback whales. Most tours guarantee sightings and also include sea lions, eagles, and sometimes orcas.
Helicopter Tour & Glacier Dogsledding
For an epic experience, take a helicopter ride over Juneau’s icefields and land on a glacier to meet an Iditarod dog team. Yes, you get to ride the sled! This is one of the most expensive tours, but is an exciting excursion!
Mount Roberts Tramway
For a more relaxed option, take the tramway up Mount Roberts for panoramic views, hiking trails, and Native Alaskan cultural displays. I recommend not booking a ticket until you are on shore. You will want to make sure you have clear skies before spending $60 on tickets to ride to the top of the mountain.
Tip: Book your excursions early—popular ones like whale watching, the train in Skagway, and helicopter tours tend to sell out quickly.

Skagway: Gold Rush Town with Big Adventures

Takshanuk Mountain Trail by 4×4
If you want views with a side of adventure, take a guided 4×4 ATV ride through the Takshanuk Mountains.
You’ll drive up 1,500 feet on a rugged trail that wides it way through waterfalls, natural lake, over streams and end with sweeping views of Chilkoot Lake. Guests will also enjoy lunch in the mountains at the rustic lodge before heading back down the mountain.
*You must book a ticket on the Haines Fast Ferry before booking this excursion. The ferry can sellout, so they want to make sure you have secured your transportation before booking.
White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad
Step back in time on this historic narrow-gauge railway. It winds through mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, and sheer cliffs—an unforgettable ride with photo ops at every turn.
Glacier Point Wilderness Safari
A fast boat ride across fjords takes you to Glacier Point, where you’ll gear up for a short hike and paddle across a lake to the face of Davidson Glacier. Adventurous and stunning.
Dog Sledding & Mushers Camp
Learn about the life of Alaskan mushers, meet their adorable dogs, and even go for a wheeled sled ride through the forest.
Gold Rush Cemetery & Reid Falls Hike
Take a walk through Skagway’s colorful Gold Rush history and enjoy the short scenic hike to the beautiful Reid Falls. Great for those looking for a free excursion.
Ketchikan: Totem Poles, Wildlife & Waterfalls

Shore Fishing
Head to Dolly’s Place to rent a fishing pole for $30 per hours (fishing license for those 17 and under). Then make your way to several locations around town for salmon fishing. My son didn’t catch a fish while we were there, but it was still a good time.
Misty Fjords National Monument Flightseeing
A floatplane ride over the Misty Fjords is like flying through a living postcard—towering granite cliffs, hidden lakes, and plunging waterfalls.
Lumberjack Show
A fun, family-friendly show featuring real competitive lumberjacks. Great for kids and adults alike!
Totem Bight State Historical Park
Take a guided tour through this beautiful park to learn about Native Alaskan culture and admire the intricate totem poles.
Kayaking or Zodiac Boat Tours
Explore Ketchikan’s lush coastlines by kayak or small boat to spot sea otters, bald eagles, and possibly bears or whales.
Victoria, Canada: Gardens & Historic Charm

Inner Harbour Walking Tour
Victoria’s waterfront is walkable, charming, and full of history. Visit Parliament buildings, dine at fisherman’s warf, local shops, and enjoy views of the harbor. Victoria has maps and signs all over town marking the trail, making it easy to follow.

Try Local Ice Cream
One of our favorite things to do when visiting a new city is getting ice cream. We found a perfect spot close to the the Parliament buildings. My son had the bubble waffle and I had the rolled ice cream. Both were so delicious.
Butchart Gardens
This world-famous garden is a must-see. With themed floral displays, fountains, and walking paths, it’s especially lovely in the evening with lights and music.

High Tea at the Fairmont Empress
Step back in time with a traditional high tea service at Victoria’s most iconic hotel. A delicious way to spend your afternoon. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but a very cool experience.
Craigdarroch Castle
Explore this beautiful Victorian-era mansion for a taste of local history and gorgeous architecture.
