If your family loves to be outside, then there’s no better place in the world to be than the Black Hills in South Dakota. These hills are full of interesting trails and even an old railroad tunnel, not to mention the four presidents carved into granite.

Why the Black Hills is suitable for families
The Black Hills suit families for numerous reasons. Most of the big cities are just a short drive apart, and they all have family-friendly places where you can stop for lunch, a drink, or just a snack.
What are some things you should be doing if you’re taking the family to the Black Hills?
Watch bison in Custer State Park
Watching bison in Custer State Park is a sublime experience. There are more than 1,300 of these animals in the nature reserve, along with elk and friendly burros. The best time to go is early in the morning or late at night, when the animals are most active. During the middle of the day, they tend to slow down, especially during hot weather. Just make sure you stay safe and keep your car at a safe distance. Bison have been known to charge.

Follow the Mickelson Trail
If you get the chance, it’s also a good idea to follow the George S. Mickelson Trail. It runs along the old rail line for almost 109 miles but remains at a gentle grade. This makes it perfect for walking or cycling long distances in a single day without feeling exhausted by the end of it. Our advice is to pick shorter stretches and then turn back when everybody still has energy. Don’t try to do the whole 109 miles in one go, even if you’re feeling energetic early in the morning.
Choose the right type of base
When you’re traveling to the Black Hills as a family, it can be difficult to know where to stay. The best option is to find a Black Hills RV resort. Not only are these inexpensive, but many of them have plenty of amenities for kids to enjoy while you unwind in the evening after a long day in nature. They also sometimes organize activities and have a dog park that you can use to exercise your pup if necessary.
Pack for bad weather
Weather in the Black Hills can change quickly, so it’s a good idea to make sure your family has all the layers they need, including the right shoes, rain jackets, and thermals. Make sure you always pack more water and snacks than you think you’ll need, just in case. Many families set off on what they think is a 2-hour trip, only to discover that it’s going to take them 6 hours.
Take time out sometimes
Lastly, it’s a good idea to take time out sometimes. While filling the calendar with activities can be fun sometimes, the Black Hills also require moments of silence and quiet to take in their beauty. When you stop to take a rest, you will often see bison crossing roads or fog lifting through the valley.
