Flying may have become more accessible, but make no mistake: the road trip is still the king of travel. After all, no matter how convenient and affordable flying becomes, there are simply things that it’ll never offer. For instance, flexibility, freedom, and not having to spend several hours surrounded by hundreds of strangers.

Road trips, on the other hand, do offer all those things, as well as much more. Even basic road trips are enjoyable, but to get the most from your trip, we’d recommend pushing the boat out slightly and taking a few additional steps that can turn your trip into an adventure to remember.
Below, we’ve put together a few handy tips that can make a big difference.
Put Together a Great Route
As we said above, even basic road trips can offer awesome levels of fun. That’s a lot of enjoyment to be had in exploring the small towns and attractions of just about any part of the United States.
Still, if you have ambitions of making this a trip to remember, then we’d recommend making an effort to put together one of those all-time-great road trip routes. Even if you have just a region or state (Texas, for example, is big enough that you can easily do a great road trip within its borders), picking out the highlights will ensure that it’s nothing but great attraction after great attraction.
Consider Upgrading to an RV
You can have a lot of fun road tripping in your everyday vehicle, but it’s also just a fact that camping can become a little tiresome after a few nights of sleeping on the floor. To get the most from your trip, you’ll need a comfortable bed. So how do you retain the adventure of a road trip while also sleeping well? Answer: You upgrade to an RV. They’re easy to rent, and once you’ve got your hands on the keys, you’ll have the freedom to comfortably go wherever you please. RV parks can also be unexpectedly great places to pass the night, too, since they often have plenty of modern amenities and a strong sense of community that can add another layer of fun to your trip.
If you’re committed to camping or don’t have the option of renting/buying an RV, then look at buying quality camping equipment and/or breaking up your nights in the tent by staying in a motel every few nights.
Take the Scenic Route
Google Maps will tell you the quickest way to get to wherever you need to be, but part of the fun of traveling in an RV is that you’re not particularly interested in getting somewhere quickly. What matters is that you have fun. Rather than picking whatever route seems the most logical, pick the route that seems the most beautiful. You’re not going to regret adding an hour to your trip if your route takes you past some truly breathtaking views that most people don’t get to enjoy. It’s what makes road trips so special.
