We all know that keeping a house in good condition can cost us a lot of money; from needing to get the gutters cleaned out regularly to getting a repairman in to see to the washing machine, maintenance costs a pretty penny!
However, alongside this, keeping a home spick and span can take a lot of time too. And most of all, you hate having to dedicate a full weekend to the entire job! However, there are plenty of ways to cut down how much effort you have to put into a total home clean, and we’ve got some top tips for doing just that below.
Tips on keeping your house clean
The Outside
The best thing to do is start with the outside of your home, i.e., the front lawn, door, windows, and pathway. Because this is where a lot of dirt collects over the years, and it rarely ever gets cleaned, and starting with it will eliminate a lot of trouble later on.
Make sure there’s no trash, and that you’ve trimmed any wild hedges or plants. Make sure there’s no tire marks, if you regularly park your car here, and feel free to wash down the siding of your home if that’s yellowed over time.
You can even get a professional, such as Labor Panes, out to clean your windows for you, especially if you’ve got high panes or you’ve noticed a lot of grime on the upstairs set. Don’t try to clean these yourself; you won’t clean quickly after a broken ankle from falling off a ladder!
The Inside
Now we tackle the big job; to do this, collect all your materials together at once, and then make sure there’s no items that can’t be thrown away left out. Magazines you’re still reading, TV remotes, etc., need to be collected together and kept out of the way for now.
Then get started with dusting high areas, such as shelf tops and the ceiling, and then get to vacuuming anything below. This’ll stop you from needing to run around twice! For hardwood or lino, be sure to sweep and mop (in that order), and then get to cleaning waist height surfaces such as kitchen counters and dining tables.
The Backyard
Then we move onto the back side of your home – the garden can be a unique job. If you don’t already have a compost heap out here, it might be in your interest to build one. It’ll make dealing with organic waste much easier, including many types of household dirt.
Rake around the lawn first for leaves, then wash any decking or patio, then trim and tidy plant beds and smaller gardens, like ponds and rockeries. It’ll help you to stay in control of the mess.
Cleaning your home is a big task, but it doesn’t have to take upwards of 36 to 48 hours. Make sure you take your home section by section, and work in a cycle that prevents you from ever doubling back on yourself.
